ASUU NEC in a meeting to decide the fate of students

Strike: ASUU NEC in crucial meeting August 28, 2022 By Adesina Wahab The National Executive Council, NEC, of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, will tonight/tomorrow morning decide on whether the union would continue its over six months strike that has left most public universities in the country shut down. However, feelers from sources in the union suggest that baring any last-minute change of mind, the union would continue the industrial action. The development may leave it as the only union in the university system that is still on strike. Others, namely the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Allied Institutions, NASU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, have suspended their actions for a few months to allow the Federal Government look into their demands. A member of NEC, who is also a Zonal Chairman of the union, told Sunday Vanguard in confidence that the members are...

Waec examination board share light on their candidate outcome

The truth is that, until the government works thoroughly on the other bodies that participate in the examination malpractice and remain unchecked; pays the teachers a good salary and provide the available tools and equipment for teaching and learning, and the parents support the education sector by letting the students go to school at the proper time and the society encourages those that fail, we will be wallowing in a more disastrous menaces that would sniff life out of this country’s progress and development. On checking the results, the students, parents and well wishers around the country started celebrating in the media, prominently competing to show the As, Bs and the Cs the students got in the examinations, despite knowing the root and the exigencies on which the 70% of the students hinges upon to pass the examinations. It’s well known that in the contemporary Nigerian secondary schools, a school hardly produced 20 candidates who could pass the examinations without being in...

WE CAN ONLY RESUME WHEN OUR WITHHELD SALARIES ARE PAID -ASUU

JUST IN   WE CAN ONLY RESUME WHEN OUR WITHHELD SALARIES ARE PAID -ASUU  “He is joking. If they fail to pay, we will not teach those students; we won’t make up for that period. We will start a new session (2022/2023). We won’t conduct examinations; we will start a fresh session totally. Lecturers are not doctors that once life is gone, it can’t be brought back. For lecturers, we can still resume where we stopped and still teach them and make up for lost time. But for us, if they fail to pay we won’t make up for the lost time. We won’t go back to fill backlogs; the schools will start a new session, 2022/2023. Examinations and the period lost won’t be taught.” He added, ‘’If they want to do ‘no work no pay,’ we will also do ‘no pay no work.’ If they won’t pay the backlog, we won’t teach the backlog. We are not like other workers. He doesn’t know what he is saying.”

What actually led to the total shutdown of the national power grid

Businesses and other power consumers were thrown into darkness on Wednesday as the industrial action embarked upon by electricity workers, which lasted for almost one day, led to the total shutdown of the national power grid. Power generation crashed fell below 4,000 megawatts as workers of the National Union of Electricity Employees went on strike to protest against a compulsory promotion interview for principal managers, unpaid entitlement, among other issues. Although the Federal Government announced on Wednesday night that the union had halted the strike, it had earlier declared that the action by the electricity workers resulted in a collapse of the country’s grid. “Following the industrial dispute declared by the two in-house unions at the Transmission Company of Nigeria, the national electric power grid has been shut down by union functionaries – even as unfettered effort was being made to resolve the issues upon which the action was called,” the government stated in a stat...
